The cry of alert of the French Society of Dermatology

Dermatologue Peau Noire

Since 2015, a large epidemiological study in dermatology of national scope, has been conducted on a sample of 20,000 people, and this one in collaboration with renowned partners. The results have just been published (http://dermato-info.fr/) and the French Society of Dermatology (= SFD) is sounding the alarm. With the aim of assessing the prevalence of skin diseases and studying their psychosocial and occupational impacts, this study shed light on the obstacle course that people with skin diseases experience on a daily basis. The best known is acne, but it leads in its wake eczema, psoriasis, brown spots, or vitiligo ... It has been referenced that 16 million French people, or nearly a third of the population, are concerned by this problem, identified today as a real public health concern. However, it seems that these dermatoses are the great forgotten of research programs and the downward trend in the number of dermatologists is not to reassure. https://inoya-laboratoire.com/fr/info/dermatologue-peau-noire.html

The main difficulty in living with these pathologies lies in the fact that they are mostly visible, and therefore among the most stigmatizing. Thus the patient must face the looks of others, the prejudices of people, due to the ignorance of these dermatoses. He often finds himself isolated, in significant depressive and anxiety states. According to Mr Jean-Marie Meurant, President of the French Association of Vitiligo and the Aalliance Internationale Global Skin, " the daily life of these men and women is governed by fear, isolation, physical and psychological suffering. Today, 60% of patients feel abandoned by medicine ."

In addition, patients with skin diseases; because they affect the physical barrier that is the skin ; are directly affected by environmental factors (sun, heat,...). The latter often aggravate their pathology and imply for the person a permanent adaptation of his living conditions. These pathologies are cumbersome to manage and impact, not only the personal habits of the patient but also those of his entourage. It should be noted that the treatments of these dermatoses are for the most part the responsibility of the patient without any reimbursement being made to him. This is discriminatory. The poorest see their symptoms worsen due to lack of financial means. It therefore seems urgent that the public authorities take a new look at skin diseases and consider them as such.

Solutions to improve the daily lives of these people must be provided. Informing the public and mobilising public authorities and other health actors would be a good start. In these areas, the media and institutions have an important role to play. At present, it seems that mentalities are changing in the right direction. A certain open-mindedness is felt. More and more world-famous brands (fashion, beauty, luxury,...) highlight atypical beauties. The most telling success story is that of Chantelle Brown-Young. Nicknamed Winnie Harlow, suffering from vitiligo, she became the emblematic muse of Desigual.
