Long reserved for lighter skin tones, salicylic acid is now a key active ingredient for treating breakouts, excess shine and enlarged pores — provided it is used at the right concentration and in formulas adapted to phototypes IV to VI.
What is salicylic acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a chemical exfoliant that works both on the skin’s surface and deep within the pores thanks to its oil-soluble properties. It removes dead skin cells, regulates excess sebum, unclogs pores and soothes acne-related inflammation.
How does it work on the skin?
It combines exfoliating, sebum-regulating, comedolytic and anti-inflammatory actions. It refines skin texture, reduces shine and limits the appearance of new blemishes.
Specific considerations for Black, brown and mixed skin
Higher phototypes have an increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and often experience excess sebum production in the T-zone. When used correctly, salicylic acid helps control imperfections without irritating the skin and reduces the risk of dark spots.
